LCP® MAX Manual Safety Models Product Safety Bulletin

LCP® MAX Manual Safety Models Product Safety Bulletin

Overview

We have discovered that in some LCP MAX Manual Safety models, the recess that retains the safety lever detent spring may not be machined properly. When this condition is present, the safety lever detent spring can become dislodged under the recoil of firing. If this happens, the manual safety lever will have no resistance and will not remain in the "safe" position. If present, the condition typically will emerge after firing 50-100 rounds through the pistol and the condition will be readily apparent when attempting normal operation. The video below shows the condition.

Note that if this condition occurs, the other safety mechanisms in your pistol, including the trigger safety, are not affected and will still function properly.

What Pistols Are Potentially Affected?

Potentially affected pistols include only LCP MAX Manual Safety models with a serial number below 383100000.

Only LCP MAX Manual Safety models with a serial number below 383100000 are potentially affected. Other models of the LCP MAX; LCP MAX pistols equipped from the factory with the Magpul Enhanced Handgun Grip ("EHG"), regardless of serial number; and other models of the LCP are not affected.

How Can I Check To See if My Pistol Is Affected?

Ruger recommends that customers perform regular function checks on all firearms. This check should include verification of the operation of the manual safety. To verify the manual safety is working properly on your LCP MAX pistol, with the pistol pointed in a safe direction:

  • Remove the magazine.
  • Pull the slide fully to the rear.
  • Visually and physically check the chamber to ensure the pistol is completely unloaded.
  • Release the slide to cock the hammer.
  • Push the manual safety lever upward to the "safe" position and release it.
  • Inspect the safety lever to ensure it remains in the "safe" position.

If the manual safety lever moves to the "fire" position under its own weight or does not positively engage in the "safe" position (there is no audible "click"), it is not functioning properly.

FAQ

Why is Ruger issuing this Safety Bulletin?
We have discovered that in some LCP MAX pistols, the recess that retains the safety lever detent spring may not be machined properly. When this condition is present, the safety lever detent spring can become dislodged under the recoil of firing. If this happens, the manual safety lever will have no resistance and will not remain in the "safe" position.
How can I tell if my pistol is affected?
Only LCP MAX pistols with a manual safety and a serial number below 383100000 are potentially affected. LCP MAX pistols equipped from the factory with the Magpul EHG, regardless of serial number, are not affected. If you are not sure if your pistol is potentially affected, please enter your serial number. Note that your pistol is only affected if it is demonstrating the condition described in the bulletin – that is, the manual safety lever will not stay in place when you attempt to engage the safety.
I have not experienced this issue on my pistol; will I experience it in the future?
The condition tends to appear over time. In affected pistols, the safety lever detent spring has the potential to become dislodged over time under the recoil of firing. The condition typically will appear after firing 50-100 rounds through the pistol.
Can I test to see if my pistol is affected?
You can test to see if the condition is currently present, but newer pistols that have not been fired 50-100 rounds may exhibit the condition in the future. To test if the condition is currently present, perform a function check of the manual safety.
Ensure the pistol is completely unloaded and pointed in a safe direction:
  • Pull the slide fully to the rear and release it to cock the hammer;
  • Push the manual safety lever upward to the "safe" position and release it;
  • While holding the pistol horizontally, inspect the safety lever to ensure it remains in the "safe" position.

If the manual safety lever moves to the "fire" position under its own weight or does not positively engage in the "safe" position, it is not functioning properly.
My pistol has a Magpul EHG. Is it affected?
LCP MAX pistols equipped from the factory with a Magpul EHG are not affected. If you are not sure, you can enter your serial number.
My pistol in not showing the condition described but is in the serial number range. Should I send it in?
We are only asking customers whose pistol is exhibiting the condition (that is, the manual safety lever will not stay in place and experiences no resistance) to sign up for the retrofit and send their gun in. If you are not currently experiencing the condition, please monitor the operation of your safety lever and perform periodic function checks. If the condition emerges in the future, you should sign up for the Safety Bulletin at that time.
How long will you have my pistol?
We will make every effort to complete the retrofit and return your pistol within one week of receiving it.
How do I sign up for the retrofit?
Enter your serial number and required contact information. We will create an RMA and send you a pre-paid shipping label. We will perform the retrofit and return your pistol at no cost to you.
What if I live outside the United States?
If you live outside the United States, you should first determine if your pistol is subject to the Safety Bulletin. If your pistol is subject to the Safety Bulletin and your manual safety lever is not operating properly, you should enter your serial number and contact information. Your in-country distributor will contact you to make arrangements for your pistol. Please note that by signing up for the retrofit, you are giving us permission to provide your contact information to your in-country distributor, who will perform the retrofit.
